Getting metafield column names and value formats right is one of the trickiest parts of a bulk import. The new metafield template tool generates an Excel file with every metafield definition on your store already laid out, with the correct column headers, value formats, and one tab per resource type, so you can start editing instead of guessing.
What’s new#
- Metafield import template - go to Tools > Metafield import template and click Generate template to download an Excel file populated with your store’s metafield definitions.
- One tab per resource type - separate tabs for Products (including variant metafields), Smart Collections, Manual Collections, Customers, Orders, Draft Orders, Pages, Blog posts, Companies, Locations, and Markets. Only tabs with definitions are included.
- Correct headers, every time - each metafield column uses Altera’s exact header format, e.g.
Metafield: custom.material [single_line_text_field]orVariant Metafield: specs.weight [weight], so you never have to look up the namespace, key, or type by hand. - Example values for every type - each column is pre-filled with a working example in the format Altera’s importer accepts: hex colors, ISO dates,
{"value": 21.5, "unit": "celsius"}measurements, product handles for references, JSON arrays for list types, and so on (see the metafields reference for the full list). - New Tools section - both the metafield template and Data transformations now live under Tools in the left-hand menu, giving non-import/export utilities a clear home.
